The Telecentre Times: Promoting south-south cooperation

The Telecentre Times, a brainchild of UgaBYTES Initiative, Sarvodaya, and D.Net is a printed newspaper by and for telecentre people.  The project is supported by telecentre.org. D.Net has also produced a Bengali version of the newspaper. Meanwhile, the first Arabic edition of Telecentre Times will be launched at GK3 in December, thanks to the excellent leadership of Mayar and Kasim Karim from the Arab Telecentre Network in Egypt.

The Telecentre Times, a tabloid English language quarterly newspaper is an innovative effort  to bring valuable information and experience of the telecentre managers, practitioners and decision makers at one place.

UgaBYTES Initiative coordinates the Telecentre Times, and its online versions. UgaBYTES is a not-for profit telecentre support network, established since 2000. It facilitates telecentres to increase their capacity by sharing knowledge and e-discussions to create an impact to the grassroots development.

The organization is also involved building capacities of telecentre practitioners in management and technical aspects and carries out lobby and advocacy roles. UgaBYTES has become the most influential telecentre support network in the region using online and offline support services.  The mission of UgaBYTES is to promote rural access to ICT for development through strengthening telecentre community in East and Central Africa.

    The online version complements the paper version that is already in circulation within the telecentre community since the official launch in Sri Lanka in May 2006 during the Global Knowledge Partnership conference.
